15 Minute #12

Back from Holiday Vacation.  The first ever where I don't have to go back to school come January! Yesssss.

As for this session's progress...  Well, you win some, you lose some.  I spent about 3/4 of my time trying something new with the vines only to scrap it all and go in a different direction.  Progress is hard to show when this happens.  I included close ups (before and after) of a section I was able to get done before time ran out.  I think I'm going to refine all the vine lines like this.  I'm also definitely planning to take some out, it got kind of crazy and I don't even have all the foliage in yet.

Needless to say this technique is going to take time!  I started this piece wanting it to just be a concept.  Still loose and fun.  As I go along however, I've gotten more and more detailed.  This isn't a bad thing, just different.  I think it's safe to say this passed the concept line a while back and now sits in the territory of illustration.  Either way it is still very interesting to work on... even if I have to back track every now and then.

AFTER - Vines Refined

15 Minute #11

Boring background cleanup, but it's something that must be done... Chomping at the bit to start color!!!  I was going to try and finish by the end of the year but I like the life this piece is having on it's own.  I'm happy to take my time.  I guess IT will decide when it's finished! ^__^

15 Minute #10

Two in one day!!  Hooray I had time!  Paid attention to the other lovely lady and added more leaves!  So happy I got to revisit in the same day :D  Starting to pick up some steam on this!

15 Minute # 9

Inked one of the girls and started on a strategy for the leaves.  Don't know if I'm going to go with it but we shall see....

15 Minute #8

Vines are done...finally.  Starting to rough in patches of leaves.  Insanely busy week behind me now so hopefully I can get to this for a few consecutive days...hopefully.  It is quite relaxing to do a project like this.  I look forward to it every time.

15 minute # 7

Finally getting back to this after a very busy week.  Started on the vines. I turned them red for now so I could see what I was doing.  Most of this detail will probably be covered up in the end but I like to know the structure of things I guess.  Vines are just as tedious as hair but not as much fun sadly.

Scribbles from 37,000 feet

Back from a long weekend in LA.  I'm still recovering but all in all it was amazing!  2 concerts and the CTN expo!  Plus a lot of vintage shopping in Burbank and Hollywood!  I've come back totally inspired!

On the plane rides to and from I got stuck in a middle seat....bleh!  I got used to it about an hour after each take off but needless to say I didn't have much room to relax and draw like I wanted.  Here are some scribbles I managed to hammer out before my hand started to hurt from hold the pen at such a weird angle.

I've been looking at a lot of Erte recently...and it shows. :)

15 minute # 6

Chugging along with the hair detail.  I've found having only 15 min to work is both good and bad.  It's bad because I really get into the groove after about 5 mins and it's TERRIBLY hard and frustrating to stop.  But on the other hand it's good because going in I know I only have a short length of time.  I enter with focus and can't afford much doubt.  It also cuts down on noodling things to death.  A tendency I don't think any artist is completely free of.

All in all I am enjoying this experiment.

15 minute # 5

Let the hair craziness begin!  It's always slow and tricky but the time flew because I love drawing it so much! <3

15 minute # 4

The blocky phase I guess.  Since most of the details on the girls are taken care of I roughly blocked out the rest of the composition.  I think I did a good job holding myself off on detailing the hair and vines to this point.  You know how much I LOVE to draw hair...  But now the time has come to fill in the rest of the details!  YAY!  My fav! Oh yes and I fixed the background.

It may look messy now but the direction is clear now.  Time to do what illustrators love to do best: ADD DETAILS!!

Another 15

Moving along quite nicely.  Starting to tell more of a story.  I was a little obsessed with the girl on the right during this round.  Went through a lot of trial and error with her.  I decided to go a different direction with the background and threw some preliminary shading on.  It helps to figure some things out I guess.  Still a bit of a journey to go...
See ya next time :)

15 minute #2

I cheated a little by a few minutes!!  Ah!  It's so hard to stop!!  Anyway the background is kind of working, just need to get away from it and think...

The first 15

Since my NEW website is just around the corner, I guess all the creative work for it has inspired something new.  Here is my latest concept, I don't know quite where it's going just yet but I have an idea of what I eventually want.  These things have a life of their own sometimes.  However I thought it would be cool if I only work on it for 15 minutes at a time and then post the progress.

So here it is: the 1st 15 minutes

His Bride

Feels good to draw again for the hell of it.  I've been so busy I haven't gotten to finish a concept in a long time.  This was inspired by a cheesy couples picture in a magazine oddly enough.

I'm currently taking 2 animated shorts through production.  Needless to say I haven't had much time to post!!  I recently closed a project I started at the beginning of the year "Sketch366" for the same reason.

I'll be posting art from it on this blog soon plus new art work as well.  Stay tuned!!

Thanks for viewing,

Back to the Drawing board!

Well actually I never left and that's exactly why I've been too busy to post.  The end of the year proved to be a test of skill and my own sanity.  Ha! I'm being dramatic.  It was very, very busy though.  The new year didn't offer much rest either.  On saturday I returned from a week long stay in LA.  It was amazing and truly one of the most inspiring experiences of my life.  But to put the cherry on top school started up again on Tuesday!!  This semester will be the worst of all I fear.  Oh well chin up, shoulders back and keep drawing!

This guy is really workin' that toothpick.  :)
